Pulp painting is an advanced papermaking technique in which finely beaten pulp is pigmented and used as “paint” on top of freshly-formed pulp sheets, then pressed and dried into handmade papers. Understanding that fibres possess their own characteristics and history including agricultural, geographical, and cultural traditions connected to documentation, transformed my practice. Working with natural fibres—a material that is alive and considered conscious in many ontologies—I have to collaborate with their physicality and natural behaviours in order to create. The work, whether painting or papermaking, begins before my direct intervention. It is a practice of listening, letting go, and being present.
