In Where the Light Finds You, Raoul Olou examines the shifting qualities of light, film motion, uncertainty, and memory. He captures the sensation and movement of light as a wave-like particle, translated onto paper and activated through the shifting perception of the viewer, creating a filmic experience within painting.
In these works, Olou uses holofoil to represent the changing physical properties of light. He extends this exploration by combining it with handmade pulp-paper, oil, and gouache, layering organic and reflective materials to reflect the complexity of creation.
As a filmmaker influenced by cinéma vérité, Olou draws on a style that uses improvisation and observation to reveal reality through the camera’s presence. These light-sensitive paintings become spaces for layered narratives drawn from lived experience.
The title Where the Light Finds You functions as both question and statement, reinforcing a circular structure where prompt and response are intertwined.
