A Map is not a place

Oakwood Village . A map is not a place (2023)

Oakwood Village enacts “the map is not the territory”—the principle that any representation is an abstraction, not the full reality—through participatory storytelling. Youth created counter-maps with DIY video, guided by lived experience, emotion, and ancestral memory. Informed by systems theory, which views places as interconnected networks of relationships, the project uses narrative restoration to transform mapping into a tool of reflection, memory, and cultural preservation, revealing the complex, lived reality of place
