“Color Theory” is a 12 week course open to all levels, but particularly focused for beginners and those that have some experience but want to try new techniques for their own personal work and practice. Through demos, practical exercises and one-on-one feedback, we will explore basic concepts of color theory ,color mixing, and tonal composition.

We will cover the following:

  • How to choose, experiment with, and mix your own color palette—understanding how to apply color theory to still life or plein air practice .

  • Practicing still life with a variety of light setup and conditions to learn how light interacts with color and different materials

  • Experimenting with color relationships by creating your own color charts, gamut (the entire group of possible colors for a given painting),and color wheels.

It will be a mix of plein air, when the weather permits, and in studio practice.

This class is centered in a non-intimidating educational environment in which mistakes and learning from our mistakes are not only welcomed but strongly encouraged. Together we will analyze our paintings and learn how to utilize, exploit, and fix mistakes in order to make more intentional, meaningful, and confident painting decisions.

Further suggested exercises, resources, and references on painting will be provided to ensure continued explorations in your practice.
