Fall…HEllo ..Painting RUNdown …..Timelapse.classes.catalog..so forth and so forth

I hope this newsletter in this weather (of to-day/night) finds you well.

Sooooo it’s still fall—life is life-ing, mondays are monday-ing ,feels are feel-ing, leaves are leave-ing, idea are idea-ing, painting are fun-things,

you get it.

Soooo I enjoy a good timelapse, they can be informative and help make lengthy repetitive actions fun. I’m going to share a timelapse of the creation of 2 paintings that are currently showing at

”Low Earth Orbit “ with the cool folks of Smoke the Moon in Santa Fe, NM.

But first I’m going to do an accurate retelling of the making, a.k.a a rundown. You can skip the text, straight to the video, if you’re not into rundowns.

The Rundown

DAY 1

06:30am: Another sunny day in November, it looks like its going to be a great day for making paper.

08 am: go for a run, play some tennis, do 72 pushups 15 pull up, go rock climbing, and then some restorative yoga

08:45am: smoothie with all the superfoods fruits

10am: studio time, the pulp has been rinsed the night before and i already filled the vat with water, it’s showtime!

10:05am: have a coffee then it’s showtime!!

10:30am: take some time to build a tripod with an easel, a goose neck, and a clamp, to film a timelapse of the painting

11:05am: the tripod is ready to record the timelapse, it’s showtime!!!

12:00pm: showtime is live, and recording !

The pulp is pretty thin but it will dry uniformly because the fibers (abaca) are pretty strong. The pulp paintings looks like thin watercolor paintings that have a lot of raised textures or some phyllo pastry with some paint on top, it’s going well!

Working on 2 pieces of the same body of work simultaneously helps with batching—making the colors and mark marking more cohesive, also ensuring that I have the same level of details and focus in both.

Anytime I have an issue with a specific area in one painting, I can take a break and move to another one , marks made on one painting can inform what you do on another and it may be what that other painting needs.

1pm: Lunch, very important meal! the camera is still rolling the timelapse will have 34 second of empty screen

1:11pm: Go on a walk in the sun, do 50 pushups, 100 pull ups, and a 30 minute plank on three fingers.

2:00pm: It’s showtime !!!! the paintings are still looking like 2 thin 16x20”croissant doughs, with some watercolors on top but its very normal at this point, no need to panic. The playlist starts playing the Rocky theme song. That moment when he’s running in the empty streets of Philly, and start running much faster, and runs on the stairs and he’s super happy.

3:30pm: time passes, the sunset is looking great

5:00pm: Time to do some stretches. Clear forms are starting to emerge as the pulp paints settle into the base sheet. The paintings are getting also getting thicker, I’m adding “fibre extensions” to the paintings, breaking the rectangle form.

It’s dark outside

7:00pm: Taking a break before making thoughtless decisions. Most of the elements are in place, I’ll adjust some contrast and colors here and there.

DAY 2

07am: go for a run, play some tennis, do 73 pushups and 16 pull ups, go rock climbing, and then some restorative yoga

07:45am: smoothie with superfoods and fruits

9:00am: It’s showtime!
